Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and is known for its vast wilderness areas. The north east is mountainous and densely forested and the central region consists of a large plateau of plains and arable land. The country’s coastline extends 800 kilometers/500 miles along the Indian Ocean. The major gateway to most safari parks is Arusha in the north east. Tanzania’s highest point is Mount Kilimanjaro at 5900 meters/19,350 feet in height. Its official languages are Swahili and English. It is interesting to know that 40 % of the country is considered a protected area for conservation with 16 existing national parks. The vast majority of visitors to Tanzania of course come to experience the amazing wildlife here. Thousands of wild animals and tropical birds make Tanzania their home. With its wide plains, dense forests, majestic mountains and shimmering lakes, the visitor can be spoiled for choice in both animal and bird life viewing. Most safaris are undertaken in vehicles with around 8 passengers and an experienced game tracker/guide who is also the driver. There are several types of accommodation to choose from – lodges, tented camps and resorts. Tanzania has a large number of wildlife parks but the most popular and best known are the following.

Rwanda is a landlocked country situated on the eastern rim of the Albertine Rift which is on the western arm of the Great Rift Valley in Eastern Africa. Much of the country is attractively mountainous, the highest peak being 4500 metres/14,600 feet. It is known as “The Land of a Thousand Hills”, an apt description as it consists of green undulating hills with gardens and tea plantations dotted around them. What is important is that it is home to one third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, one third of Africa’s bird species and several other species of primates. The capital is Kigali, an attractive city sprawling across four mountain ridges and the valleys between.

Lake Manyara is a scenic gem with a setting extolled by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa”. Its famous tree-climbing lions are another reason to pay a visit to this park. In addition to the lions, the park is also home to the largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the world. Lake Manyara also has a great birdlife. More than 400 species have been recorded. These include thousands of pink-hued flamingos as well as other large water birds such as pelicans, cormorants and storks.

The lodge is standing high on the edge of a towering terracotta escarpment with panoramic views over the glittering alkaline waters of Lake Manyara, Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge offers a unique blend of safari opportunities, peace and tranquility, wildlife discovery, and ornithological richness. The unprecedented range of high-adventure sports, meanwhile, include mountain biking, canoeing and forest walks, while cultural choices include tours of the neighboring villages and dance displays by the local Iraqw and sukuma people. Grouped around a central ‘vanishing horizon’ pool, this highly unusual lodge features a simple timbered reception area, built in traditional African style, which is accessed via a bridge over a small stream. Beyond reception, lies the central dining room, bar and veranda, below which lies the pool. Perched on the very edge of the cliffs, with stunning views of Lake Manyara National Park is the pool bar and observation point. Dotted around the grounds, all with views over the lake are a series of circular two-storey ‘rondavels’, which house the rooms. Designed to reflect the brilliance of Lake Manyara’s unique birdlife, the architectural motif melds swooping avian curves with the gentle concentric patterns of traditional Maasai ‘Bomas’, while the vibrantly colored wall frescoes depict the colorful intricacy of bird migratory patterns.
